Animal shelters across the country are reaching capacity, prompting some organizations to find creative solutions to give animals a better chance at finding homes. Pilots N Paws, a non-profit organization, collaborates with volunteer pilots to transport dogs to their new families.
Jere Fountain, a 90-year-old pilot from Eastern North Carolina, is one such volunteer. Fountain, who has been flying planes for decades, said Pilots N Paws combines his two favorite things: planes and pups. Despite retiring over 20 years ago, he logged over 500 hours in the air last year.
“For him, working with an organization like Pilots N Paws gives him purpose and allows him to help the loving animals,” said Fountain. He added that he plans to keep flying until he reaches 100 years old.
“When you take off in the air, and once the wheels leave the ground, it’s such a great feeling,” Fountain said. “I always watch a new student; they always smile as soon as they leave the ground.”
Fountain’s passion for planes began at a young age and grew as he learned more through building model planes.
