LEWISTON, Idaho — A local photographer is using her skills to help animals at the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter find their forever homes. Kali Buck, owner of Kali Photography, has been in the profession for about a decade. What began as a hobby has now become a way for her to contribute to the community.
“I specialize in weddings, seniors, families, and obviously some pet work too,” said Buck.
About a year and a half ago, the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter reached out to Buck, asking if she would be interested in visiting the shelter once or twice a month to photograph animals available for adoption. These photos are then posted on the shelter’s website.
“Some of their long-stay dogs in particular had been at the shelter for months on end with no real prospects for adoption,” she said.
Since she began helping the shelter, Buck has found the visits to be the highlight of her month. Dogs like Piper, Iris, and Winston are among those she has photographed, all looking for a place to call home.
“These photos that I take often times are the difference between a dog sitting in a kennel for months on end or being there for a matter of days because someone sees their photo and they immediately can see their personality and they see their charm and they see their quirks and they see a star of a dog,” Buck explained.
To further spread the word about the animals, Buck shares their stories on her social media, reaching wider audiences.
“Often times they are brought in as a stray or they are brought in as an animal that has not, you know, we have no history on them so they can’t tell us what they’ve been through or where they are coming from or where they belong and so being able to help kind of give a voice to dogs that don’t have the ability to do that,” she said.
Through her work, Buck also emphasizes the importance of volunteering, fostering, and adopting. The Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter currently faces limited resources and welcomes donations of dog food, pet supplies, disinfecting supplies, and monetary contributions to support the new shelter.
