
NEWBURG, Mo. — Multiple residents were impacted by a fire on Thursday in Newburg, Phelps County.
The Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District (DRFPD) was dispatched to 21508 Private Drive 8496 for a reported structure fire with Rolla Rural Fire and Phelps Health EMS.
While en route to the area, large smoke could be seen from the 179 overpass and additional aid was requested from Waynesville, St. Robert and Dixon Fire.
When crews arrived at the scene a large, wind-driven fire was burning six buildings and one vehicle.
According to a press release, firefighters located one person in cardiac arrest while fighting back the flames. They pulled them to a safe place away and crews immediately started lifesaving efforts while continuing to fight back the fire. Firefighters noted that while conducting CPR on the subject, several large explosions were heard.
Four of the homes suffered serious damage, while the other two were able to be saved.
However, the one subject did not survive the incident and five dogs also died.
DRFPD stated that eight fire departments from three separate counties helped to extinguish the flames and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature.
