I read Katherine Kokal’s article in the July 24 paper about the dog up for adoption, “Polo.” I am writing this letter with ambivalence because, on one hand, I truly admire her obvious love of animals, but on the other hand, I question her judgment on what physical beauty is. We have all seen gaslighting in current politics, but I have never seen it in the description of a dog, as in her article:. “This brown-eyed beauty with stunning eyes.” Really?
Love at first sight:This brown-eyed beauty is looking for a new home. Can you help him?
When I saw the picture, I immediately asked my wife if she thought Polo was a beauty. She laughed and said, “They can’t be serious.” I showed it to my neighbor, who looked puzzled and said, “Is the author blind?” I, along with many others, find the pit bull terrier breeds to be among the least beautiful breeds. That is part of the reason why 75% of shelters are filled with them — nobody wants them. Their only admirable quality is their strength. Even that has a downside because 90% of the dog attacks I read and hear about are from pit bull variations.

Generally speaking, these are not “nice” dogs. However, I do realize you need to paint a pleasant picture of a “delightfully wonderful” dog in the hope somebody will adopt it. I just hope the new owner doesn’t get bitten.
