Pepper’s Hope Dog Rescue, a dedicated nonprofit dog rescue serving St. Joseph County and surrounding areas, announced it has received a $2,500 grant from the Sturgis Area Community Foundation to support its spay and neuter program.
The funding will help reduce the number of unwanted litters and alleviate financial strain on the organization, allowing it to continue providing essential medical care for rescued dogs.
Founded in September 2024, Pepper’s Hope has already taken in more than 70 dogs and adopted out more than 60 dogs.
Every dog adopted from the organization is spayed or neutered along with current on vaccines and on heartworm prevention.
“Spaying and neutering not only prevents unwanted litters, but it also improves the long-term health of animals,” said Lisa Stroup, director of Pepper’s Hope. “With this grant, we can ensure more dogs receive this vital care and free up resources to handle urgent medical needs.”
In addition to routine procedures, Pepper’s Hope takes on dogs requiring extensive medical intervention. In just the past year, the organization has covered more than $8,000 in veterinary bills including surgery for a broken leg, mass removals, biopsies, and complex dental procedures.
The $2,500 grant will directly impact 25–50 animals, benefiting families and communities across St. Joseph County.
Beyond adoptions, Pepper’s Hope plays a key role in helping owner surrenders and pulling strays from Centreville Animal Control. Recent rescues include puppies given away online without medical care, seniors requiring complex surgeries, and neglected dogs in urgent need of shelter and treatment.
“As a newer nonprofit, grants like this are critical for us to continue our mission,” Stroup said. “Adoption fees often fall short of covering the true medical costs involved in rescue, so every bit of support helps us say ‘yes’ to the next dog who needs us.”
