Pekingese wins 2024 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma

Petaluma’s Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds buzzed with excitement Friday June 21 as Wild Thang, a Pekingese, claimed the 2024 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest crown. This quirky event, a beloved tradition in Petaluma since 1988, celebrates the unique charm of unconventionally attractive canines and their heartwarming stories.

Winning the title

For Wild Thang and his owner Ann Lewis, winning the title of “World’s Ugliest Dog” is not an insult but an honor. Hailing from Coos Bay, Oregon, Wild Thang captured hearts with his perpetually hanging tongue and unique look.

The contest featured a variety of contestants, each with their own endearing quirks—from toothless grins to wild tufts of fur. According to the contest’s website, the event is “not about making fun of ‘ugly’ dogs, but having fun with some wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are really beautiful.” Since its inception, the contest has grown in popularity, attracting media attention and participants from across the country. It aims to promote the adoption of dogs with special needs and to remind people that every dog, regardless of appearance, deserves a loving home.

Perseverance pays off

Wild Thang, an 8-year-old dog, has competed in the competition five times, finishing as runner-up for the last three years. His perseverance and unique charm finally earned him the top spot.

The 2024 runner-up title went to Rome, a 14-year-old pug who uses a wheelchair for his hind legs. Rome, who visits hospice patients and educates children about the importance of adopting senior rescue pets, also won the “People’s Choice” award. His owner, Michelle Grady, expressed her excitement and pride in Rome’s achievements.

The contest, beyond its humor and charm, serves as a powerful platform to raise awareness about the importance of adopting pets with special needs.

Ann Lewis beamed with pride as she held Wild Thang, reflecting on their shared journey. Wild Thang’s transformation from an often overlooked dog to a celebrated champion epitomizes the spirit of the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest: every dog is a treasure, and every story is worth telling.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
