Paws Off: The Dog Breeds Banned In Parts Of North Dakota

I’ve have never met a dog I didn’t like before.

Except for a Labradoodle that attacked my Yellow Lab while we were out for a run last fall, but that’s a story for another time.

I’m a dog person and always have been. I especially like hunting dogs and Yellow Labrador retrievers. It’s funny; I think I’m the only dog person at my work. All of my coworkers are cat people.

I just don’t get cats. They will come up purring and loving up on you, only to change on a dime and go psycho, grabbing your arm while you pet them, clawing and trying to gnaw your arm off. I grew up with them, and I will take the meanest dog over a cat any day.

However, I am very well aware that certain dog breeds are more friendly than others.

Pit Bulls, Doberman Pinschers, and even Dalmatians can be aggressive and do not have the best reputations, especially if you are looking for a good family dog.

That got me thinking: Do we have any “banned dog breeds” in the United States?

The answer to that is NO. The Federal Government doesn’t ban any specific dog breeds, but many cities and towns have specific legislation restricting or even banning certain dog breeds, according to Pet Air.

How about the state of North Dakota? Are any breeds “Too Ruff for the Roughrider State?”

We have no dog breeds banned at the state level, but several breeds have been banned in certain communities. They include:

Bowman: Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Doberman Pinschers.

Burlighton: Bit Bulls.

Cando: Pit Bulls.

Center: Pit Bulls.

Des Lacs: Pit Bulls.

Glenburn: Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Doberman Pinschers.

Hillsboro: Pit Bulls.

Minot: Pit Bulls.

Ray: Pit Bulls, Rottweilers,  Chaw Chows, and Canary Dogs.

Velva: Pit Bulls.

Watford City: Pit Bulls.

Nothing in Bismarck, Mandan, or Lincoln. Pit Bulls seem to be the main breed of concern. Are they getting a bad rap, or is it deserved?
