CHICAGO – PAWS Chicago helped rescue a dog shot in her backyard, giving the injured animal a second chance at life and allowing her owner to enjoy a happy holiday.
Koko, a 2-year-old rescued dog, is recovering from surgery after being shot. The bullet passed through her front leg, shattered her femur, and lodged in her back leg.
The owner was distraught, as she had only two options: an expensive surgery she could not afford or having Koko put down.
Just when the owner thought hope was lost, Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) directed her to PAWS Chicago and its Pet Owner Support Team.
The collaboration between PAWS and CACC helps people keep their pets instead of surrendering them.
Whenever possible, and when they have capacity at the medical center, PAWS provides what it calls “extraordinary care” to families in need of intensive surgeries.
When Koko arrived at the medical center, she was bleeding and could barely move. PAWS veterinarians went to work.
Despite being in a lot of pain, Koko was incredibly loving and affectionate with the staff and volunteers.
She had her leg amputated but is now healing and back home.
No one knows who is responsible for shooting Koko and nearly ending her life during the holidays.
Koko is now recovering beautifully and is back home with her owner, who no doubt was able to enjoy a happy holiday, thanks to PAWS Chicago.
