AUSTIN, Texas — Hearts and Paws is offering a unique summer camp experience that promises to be both entertaining and educational for kids and their furry friends. Diana Smith, the owner of Hearts and Paws, shared details about their Club Pup Kids with Dogs Summer Camp.
Smith explained that the 26-year-old camp provides a hands-on learning environment where children can engage with dogs though basic obedience, agility training and games. “If the kids can participate in the control of the dog, it gets them more bonded and connected and they can really play more productively with the dog,” she said.
The camp is designed for children ages 9-14, allowing them to either bring their own dog or borrow one from the camp.
“Generally speaking we ask that they bring their own dog. We test them to make sure they’re temperamentally a good fit. We do a group orientation where they’re around other dogs and kids just to see if they’re okay with it. Then they train their own dog,” Smith explained. “We also have dogs that they can borrow— client dogs– from clients who are happy to loan their dogs and get someone to train it,” she added.
Smith highlighted the benefits for campers such as building a lasting foundation with their family pet. Often campers say they get to be closer, better bonded and more connected to their dog. “That means the dog’s going to stay in the home,” explained Smith.
