Owner told rescue dog “didn’t make a noise,” week later she learned truth

After six days of complete silence from their rescue dog, owners were shocked to discover how the pup demonstrated she finally felt comfortable at home.

TikTok user @emiemiozmen and her family recently rescued a dog, Mavis, from Freedom Angels Romania. It is a charity focused on saving dogs from Romania, transporting them to the U.K. and connecting them to their forever homes.

Mavis was found in the streets of Romania “nearly dead” while trying to protect her babies, her owner, Emi, told Newsweek via TikTok. Once Mavis was rescued, the dog “didn’t make a noise.” She stayed silent throughout her time with Freedom Angels Romania and when she lived with a foster family.

“We just expected her to be mute; that’s what her rescuer said about her, and she’s been mute in foster care,” Emi said. “But, as soon as she settled in with us, she now won’t keep quiet; she’s so happy.”

Rescue dogs often need weeks or months to finally let their guard down after being adopted. However, in one short week, Mavis knew she was safe and sound with her forever family. By day six, Emi said the pup started using her voice, and the family quickly learned the truth: this dog is a singing machine.

In yesterday’s TikTok clip, Mavis joined one of her owners as he pretended to howl. Mavis echoed and barked with excitement. She let out her howling cheers. She happily accepted all the pets too while lounging on the couch. Mavis knew she was home for good.

Ever since she started using her voice, the noises haven’t stopped. “She talks back to us whenever we do,” the owner said. “As soon as we play and praise, she starts singing.”

While it was new and exciting for the family to hear Mavis join in the singing, this behavior is common for dogs. An article from Vet Explains Pets shared several reasons for this. Perhaps the dog wants to feel like they are part of the pack and by singing together, they are forming a bond. They want to connect on a deeper level and express their empathy.

Other reasons include them wanting to imitate the howling sounds to be a part of the fun or because they are attempting to seek attention and engage with their owners. They could also be singing along simply because they enjoy the sound the humans make.

Viewer Reactions

Touched by the dog’s ability to find her voice again, TikTok viewers praised the family for being her safe haven.

“God bless you for saving her xxxx,” wrote one user.

Others called the moment “wholesome” and Mavis a “lovely baby.”
