A worried pet owner rushed her dog to the vet’s office and walked home with a hefty bill after a scare over what her canine ate.
TikTok user @kelseychiletti wanted to be safe rather than sorry when it came to her dog’s health. Kelsey knew grapes are toxic to dogs so when he ingested just one, she did the only thing she thought would help: drop everything and go to the emergency vet.
She explained in her January 8 TikTok video that the vet induced vomiting and rehydrated him by having “fluids pumped” in. Kelsey wondered how one grape could cause “so much chaos,” especially after seeing the bill. The quick emergency visit cost her $435.
Thankfully, her dog was fine. He was back on the couch, sleeping the day away.

The TikTok video amassed over 1.3 million views, 23,500 likes and 3,303 comments as of Wednesday.
Several viewers didn’t understand the owner’s urgency for the vet after one grape, but a vet tech assured her that she “did the safe thing.” The comment reads: … “Every dog is different on how they metabolize grapes. I had a husky come in for eating ONE grape and his kidneys were already affected.”
Another added: “Everyone hounding over a grape but none of them are paying your bills. At least you care about your dog enough to not risk it.”
Dogs In Grape Danger
Several human foods are considered dangerous to dogs, but grapes, in particular, are viewed as a giant “no-no.” It wasn’t until a few years ago that veterinarians finally discovered why, an article from Grady Veterinarian Hospital reported. Veterinarians with the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center found that tartaric acid in grapes can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney damage or failure.
The toxicity in grapes had been difficult to assess in the past because dogs can show a range of reactions from mild to acute renal failure. Some owners claim their dogs have eaten grapes and never had symptoms. However, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
The American Kennel Club recommends that no dog should ever eat grapes, even if it is only one. The same goes for raisins. Ingesting one can lead to sudden kidney failure, which can be fatal. A dog’s breed, sex or age does not influence the toxicity level.
If you believe your dog ate a grape, immediately contact your veterinarian. They might suggest inducing vomiting. This should not be done if your dog is unconscious, having trouble breathing or showing signs of distress.
