Owner of dogs in Columbus attack fought ‘dangerous’ designation of pit bull

The owner of two pit bulls that mauled a boy in the Linden neighborhood Sunday fought the Franklin County Dog Warden in court after a previous attack last year.

ABC6 Investigates found out that court battle did not end until this week after the most recent attack.

On Sunday, Columbus police received several 911 regarding two pit bulls attacking an 8-year-old boy on Hiawatha Street. The boy’s father told dispatchers that two loose pit bulls had disfigured his son’s face and arm. Body-worn camera footage released by CPD on Wednesday showed the responding officer shooting both pit bulls. One dog died and the other was later euthanized.

“The kid is messed up bad,” the officer told paramedics who arrived after him at the scene. “They put him in a cruiser and took him to Children’s (Hospital).”

According to court documents, the owner of the two pit bulls faced charges last year after his three dogs “jumped his fence” in June and charged a man walking his two dogs. The victim who tried to break up the fight and save his dogs suffered “two puncture wounds to his hand.” Police charged the pit bull owner with failure to license and control his dogs.

The dog warden also sent the dog owner notice that his pit bull named Luna had been designated as dangerous. He was ordered to quarantine his dog and complete a vet exam. According to records with Columbus Public Health, the dog owner violated those orders.

Weeks later in July of last year, the dog owner appealed the dog warden’s determination that designated his pit bull as dangerous. He then missed his court hearing and wrote to the judge, “I didn’t remember what day/time my court date was.” He asked for another hearing which the judge denied this week.

On Thursday, Franklin County Animal Care and Control sent an email to ABC6 Investigates regarding last year’s attack.

“Our records indicate that Franklin County Animal Care and Control previously responded to the address (on) Carolyn (Avenue) to investigate a dog bite incident: a dog was designated as dangerous, and criminal charges were filed, for an incident that occurred on June 22, 2024,” the agency spokesperson wrote. “However, the dog that was the subject of the June 22, 2024, incident was not one of the dogs involved in the March 2, 2025, attack.”

Neighbors on Carolyn Avenue told ABC6 Investigates this week that they’ve seen the third dog in the owner’s yard, which is making them fearful.

The Columbus City Attorney told ABC6 Investigates that the dog owner will be facing a series of misdemeanor charges related to Sunday’s attack. Animal Control investigators said those charges have not yet been filed as their investigation continues.
