Owner gets outdoor bed to stop dog getting dirty, but he has other ideas

A dog owner’s attempt to keep their pet clean while sunbathing using a “very cozy” bed has gone hilariously wrong.

The moment was captured in a viral TikTok video shared by user @phoenixlift_13. The video, which has amassed over 850,000 views since being posted on September 26, shows a determined dog refusing to use the raised outdoor bed his owner provided, instead choosing to lie directly on the ground beneath it.

A message overlaid on the video reads, “When you get your dog a raised sunbathing bed so he stops getting dirty.”

The camera then reveals an empty dog bed sitting outdoors, with the pup lounging under it, seemingly unfazed by the bed’s intended purpose. The caption accompanying the video adds, “No response is a response.”

The dog’s desire to rest under the sun outdoors is not surprising because our canine friends are known to enjoy long naps throughout the day, with some studies suggesting that they sleep for up to half their day.

According to a December 2020 study published in Scientific Reports conducted by researchers at North Carolina State University, dogs have two primary activity peaks: one from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and another in the evening from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. The study also found that dogs tend to be more active on weekends, likely due to increased interaction with their owners.

In addition to maintaining a healthy nap schedule, exposure to sunlight can offer significant benefits for dogs. Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinary officer at the American Kennel Club, previously told Newsweek that pets could be impacted by seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a condition that causes mood changes in humans due to seasonal shifts.

“When exposed to less sunlight, hamsters and rats acted depressed,” Klein explained. While such studies haven’t been directly conducted on dogs, Klein suggested dogs may experience similar changes in brain chemistry during periods of reduced daylight.

The dog’s apparent preference for the ground over the bed struck a chord with TikTok users, who flooded the comments with amused reactions.

“It works perfectly,” joked Elizabeth Hudson, while another commenter, Vanessa Issa, pointed out, “He’s still using it!”

User @brooks310 humorously remarked, “He called bottom bunk,” capturing the playful spirit of the interaction. Others chimed in with similar sentiments, noting that while the dog didn’t use the bed as intended, he still benefited from its shade.

One commenter, @mtina888, empathized with the dog’s choice, writing, “To be fair, it does look very cozy.”

Another user, @catlady608, said “Now it’s an umbrella,” while Uniqeferret added, “That’s so nice of you to get your dog a sunshade.”

The original poster replied, “I wish I would’ve seen him army crawl his potato-shaped body under there.”

Newsweek reached out to the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
