Owner catches dog’s reaction to thinking she went out: “Never leave again”

The internet’s hearts have collectively broken over a video of a golden retriever thinking he had been left at home alone while his owners went for a walk.

Eight-year-old golden, Buster, lives in Sacramento, California, with his sister Pepper and owners Anna Heylen and her partner, and like most family dogs, hates being left out.

So, when Heylen’s partner left to get coffee, and Buster thought they had all gone on a walk without him, he let his feelings out in the form of a devastating, mournful howl.

“I have heard him howl like this in his sleep probably four or five times in the past. However I had never heard or seen him howl while he was awake,” Heylen told Newsweek.

“It was the first time I had ever seen him do that awake so that is why I grabbed my camera immediately.”

In a video shared to her TikTok account @everything_goldens on June 24, which has been viewed 5.1 million times, Heylen sneaks around the corner to show Buster lying on an armchair, howling miserably.

Letting out multiple weeping howls that some commenters said sounded like the soundtrack to the Titanic, Buster’s face immediately changes when he notices Heylen recording him—and instantly brightens up with a smile.

She wrote on the video: “He thought I went on a walk without him. Watch once he notices me,” adding “Will never leave again.”

And she told Newsweek that, after witnessing Buster’s incredible sorrow, they “went for an extra long walk right away. He also got extra treats and cuddles that day, haha!”

TikTok users fell head-over-heels for Buster, with one joking: “Did anyone get Titanic soundtrack vibes before realizing it was the dog?”

“The saddest little woos,” another wrote, and one described it as “a medicine man singing his song of ethereal healing.”

“Eyes closed and everything,” one said. “He was singing the songs of sadness for sure.”

Heylen said the reaction to the video has been “really fun,” noting it’s been “all over the spectrum.”

“Some people saying ‘aw poor baby,’ while others are saying ‘what a drama queen!’ I have had a really fun time reading through the comments,” she said.

Golden retrievers aren’t known to be a particularly vocal breed, and hearing one howling—particularly when not triggered by a siren or other noise—is uncommon compared to other dogs.

According to Purina, some of the most vocal dog breeds include the basset hound, beagle, chihuahua and foxhound, with goldens not making the list at all.

Author Heylen has had goldens throughout her life, and wrote a book, The Love of A Dog, about all her animals.

She describes Buster as their “jock” pup, as he is “extremely athletic and sweet but not the sharpest tool in the shed.”

His sister, Pepper, meanwhile, is a “sweet princess who is very gentle and quite smart.”
