Owner buys $80 stair gate for dog, doesn’t go as planned

In a viral TikTok video, the owner of two Australian shepherds has revealed why she should not have bothered buying them a stair gate, and users across the platform who own the same breed seem to agree with her.

The clip, shared earlier in April under the username @theminiaussholes, shows one of the pups, Marley, standing behind the locked stair gate, which is just as tall as he is, staring at her before jumping over it in one swift move.

“When you buy an $80 gate but you own an Australian shepherd,” the poster writes in the clip. The caption says: “This gate has nothing on her hops …”

Other Aussie shepherd owners on TikTok quickly showed up in the comments, sharing their own similar experiences.

Karlie commented: “My Aussie will jump over a baby gate but not a laundry hamper. Make it make sense. So laundry hampers are our barricades.”

Another user, Meagan said: “He’s an Australian shepherd … they are part kangaroo!”

Hankster254 wrote: “Mine jumped from kitchen floor on top of the counter. No running start. Flat pawed.”

Australian shepherds are known for being a very active breed who love exercising and playing games. Vet American says that is why they need lots of walks to use up their energy, unless they have a large garden where they can run and jump as they please.

Georgia-based veterinarian Dr. Jess Kirk says in a Vet Explains Pets article that, on average, a healthy and fit dog can jump about four to five times their height. Medium-sized dogs can potentially jump up to 7 or 8 feet in the air, or even higher.

While jumping may be cute when they are puppies, it can become a problem as your dog gets older, especially if they love jumping on people; for example, strangers in the streets.

British animal charity Battersea says that the first thing to do to stop this behavior is to make sure you don’t accidentally reward them, encouraging them to do it again. So, next time your dog jumps on you, turn your back and completely ignore them.

Make sure everyone else they meet knows you are discouraging this behavior, as their training needs to be consistent to be effective. Keep them on a leash when out in public, to stop them from jumping on people.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
