GORDON, Ga. — Over 30 dogs were pulled from a vacant house in Gordon on Thursday.
Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA,) Law Enforcement Officers are actively assisting Gordon Police Department in investigating an alleged animal neglect case.
“After jointly serving a search warrant, the owners voluntarily surrendered more than 30 dogs into GDA custody,” according to a statement shared with WGXA News. “We are working directly with local rescue[s] and shelters to rehome these dogs as quickly as possible.”
When WGXA arrived on scene Thursday afternoon, a musty odor filled the air; accompanied by the sight of numerous agencies working swiftly to sort and load the animals for transport.
“It’s been a long two days,” one responder said about the on-going situation at the 100 Gordon Blvd., location.
WGXA was tipped off Wednesday night and shared word of people entering and exiting the house with dogs; some dead – some alive. However, law enforcement shared there were no deceased animals on the property when they arrived.
Gordon Police Chief Mike Hall confirmed people were no longer living inside the house. However, a neighbor told WGXA a woman had been feeding the dogs, and that the situation had been mounting for nearly two years. Another neighbor said they were not aware of the apparent animal hoarding situation until seeing the large response from law enforcement and rescue organizations.
As of Thursday night, Chief Hall said charges are pending in this case.
