COOS BAY, Ore. — Oregon has yet another gem in its crown – Wild Thang, the official World’s Ugliest Dog!
Wild Thang, an 8-year-old-Pekingbese, won the World’s Ugliest Dog championship at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California on Friday.
The World’s Ugliest Dog contest has been a highlight at the fair for almost 50 years and promotes adopting dogs from shelters, instead of breeders, especially senior dogs.
Mr. Thang and his owner Ann Lewis live in Coos Bay, Oregon, and have competed in the contest multiple times.
Known for his unique looks characterized by a lolling tongue and unruly fur, Wild Thang had finished second place in the contest three times in previous years.
“Wild Thang was a fan favorite and the fact that he had been competing for five times and only came in second. It’s kind of like the bridesmaid and never the bride. I think it really tugged on our heartstrings that he deserved to win,” said Fiona Ma, California State Treasurer & Ugly Dog Judge.
According to his bio, Wild Thang contracted distemper as a puppy from a rescue foster, causing his tongue to stick out.
Besides the physical issues, his owner says Wild Thang is healthy and happy.
“He’s never had a hair cut. That’s the way he is and she shaves his stomach and he likes to sleep on ice packs believe it or not. He is just a sweet dog. I was just holding him and he loves to be held and cuddled and that’s part of it. These rescue dogs, they just need forever homes, so please adopt, don’t shop,” Judge Ma continued.
Aside from national acclaim and adoring fans, Wild Thang and Lewus got to take home a $5,000 check.
