A person has been arrested and charges have been authorized in connection to the fatal shooting of an aggressive dog in Pennfield Township, according to Calhoun County Communications Director Amber Coco.
Deputies were called to Swift Road near Capital Avenue NE on May 23 after residents reported three aggressive dogs were running loose in the area with no known owner.
When deputies arrived, they spoke with two homeowners that reported aggressive behavior from the dogs, who were described as pitbulls, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
As a deputy approached to put the dogs in his car, the dogs charged at him and continued to advance despite verbal commands.
One of the dogs then lunged at the deputy within three to five feet. With no time to retreat or seek cover, the deputy fired his weapon three times, hitting the closest dog, according to the sheriff’s office.
The dogs’ owner arrived shortly afterward and got their other two dogs inside, deputies said.
Neighbors told News Channel 3 they were worried about the safety of everyone in the neighborhood, especially children.
“We have to feel safe in our neighborhood,” Dianna Ramon, a Pennfield Township resident, said May 27. “It is very concerning. There are a lot of children in the neighborhood, they [the dogs] should be on a leash or caged up.”
Ramon has two granddaughters: 7 and 12-years-old. She told News Channel 3 her 7-year-old granddaughter visits every weekend.
“We walk, ride bikes around the block, I am scared to go over there,” Ramon said.
As of Monday, the name of the person arrested remains withheld.
