OMAK, Wash. – A car fire turned into a police investigation after 21 dogs were found inside, some with ‘severe neglect’ and malnourishment.
According to the Omak Police Department a man had been living inside the car and using a propane heater to stay warm inside. The car caught fire and injured at least three of the dogs.
Community members used life saving measures on some of the dogs and they were transported to a nearby veterinary clinic.
Local law enforcement determined that the vehicle was unsafe and unhabitable for the animals and confiscated the dogs from the owner.
OPD says that none of the dogs required emergency medical care or euthanasia but did display signs of emaciation and will require treatment.
Officer Wert with OPD was the responding officer although off-duty at the time of the call. The department thanked him for his dedication to the safety and well-being of the dogs.
“The department extends its sincere gratitude to Officer Wert for his unwavering commitment to the animals’ well-being, as well as to the Alpine Veterinary Clinic for their support in providing essential health evaluations and care,” OPD said.
