Ole Miss basketball coach Chris Beard ranks … favorite hot dogs? Yep, he’s got thoughts

ATLANTA — Ole Miss men’s basketball coach Chris Beard has moved past salads this week.

Beard talked about the salad at Brazilian steakhouses following a loss to Auburn in the second round of the SEC Tournament. On Wednesday, the Rebels made their way to Morton’s Steakhouse in downtown Atlanta to enjoy a nice steak ahead of their Sweet 16 matchup of March Madness against Michigan State.

Beard, though, could only think of his childhood and hot dogs.

“I was born in Marietta, Georgia, right down the road,” Beard said Thursday. “My mom and dad are from Marietta, met in high school. Growing up in Marietta, we didn’t go to Morton’s in Atlanta — we went to The Varsity. I think The Varsity hot dog is arguably the best. In my opinion, it’s Coney Island, it’s The Varsity, and then it’s the old baseball game hot dog.”

The Varsity is an iconic fast-food restaurant near Georgia Tech’s campus.

Beard then talked about his preferences when it comes to hot dogs. 

“Not a big fan of the hot dog where they pull it with the tongs right off the deal, drop it in water,” Beard said. “That’s not my deal. If I’m at a baseball game and I see that there’s tin foil involved in a hot dog, that’s where we roll.”

Beard quickly returned to giving a rundown of the meal at Morton’s.

“Morton’s had the Caesar salad there last night, but the food was so amazing after the salad that — myself included — not a lot of us went with the salad,” he said. “They got the shrimp cocktails on the table and the crab cake — I guess you call them balls with a little stick in it. It’s hard to get fired up about the salad, knowing what’s coming down the line.”
