Ogden woman, spurred by recent dog-hoarding case, hosting dog adoption event in Roy

ROY — An Ogden woman says she couldn’t sit back and do nothing after witnessing the spectacle of authorities removing more than 150 dogs from a home in the city.

Lisa Peterson adopted one of the dogs, which subsequently died, and figured she had to step up her game in caring for homeless critters. She’d already been involved with other animal rescue organizations and decided to launch her own in the wake of the April 15 dog removal operation.

“It really lit a fire for me to get organized and go all in,” she said.

Moreover, this coming Sunday, May 18, she’s hosting a dog adoption event in conjunction with a pop-up market that’ll be held at 1845 W. 4400 South in Roy from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weber County Animal Services and other dog rescue organizations will take part, as well as Peterson’s new operation, Dirt Roads Rescue, which plans to have six puppies rescued from the Navajo Nation at the event.

Ogden officials rescued 157 dogs and 11 cats from a home in the 3000 block of Jefferson Avenue on April 15 after learning of the possible presence of a multitude of animals at the location. One of the men who lived there was involved in a similar hoarding incident in 2012, and he and his nephew, also residing at the location, now face several hundred misdemeanor charges in the matter in Ogden Judicial Court.

Peterson had wanted to launch her own rescue operation, “and after everything with the hoarding case, I knew it was time,” she said. She happened to be walking by the home where the animals were being removed and witnessed part of the effort.

She doesn’t think any of the dogs involved in the hoarding matter, some of which still need homes, will be at the adoption event on Sunday. She’s not sure how the dog that she adopted, Koko, died. “It was very unexpected,” she said.

The court case in the matter continues.
