GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Neighbors told us they noticed that the homeowner used to have a lot of dogs and they weren’t sure what happened to them. They thought they had been rehomed, so they were disturbed to find out where they actually were.
Inside the carport attached to a house on Fairbanks Road, Metro Animal Care and Control (MACC) found seven dead adult dogs in cages. MACC says because of their state of decomposition, they’re beyond the point of being able to do an autopsy, so it’s unclear how they died.
The reason they found them is that a fire broke out in the house early Tuesday morning.
“I was sitting right here in my front window and all I could see was brightness, it looked like it was daylight out, and I come out here and I got to about halfway in my driveway and you could just feel the heat, intensity, the whole roof was in flames,” neighbor Sabrina Hartsfield said.
Hartsfield says it was close to four in the morning when she found the homeowner sitting in her driveway. She said she was in shock and told her she had walked through the flames to get out.
“I was worried about her because she’s in my driveway, she doesn’t know where she is, who she is,” Hartsfield said.
She was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, but is expected to be ok. As for the neighbors, some said today they weren’t sure whether to be feeling sad, angry or both after what was discovered.
“Anxiety-ridden. That’s really close to home,” Hartsfield said.
We asked them if they plan on filing charges, and MACC says it is a possibility.
