NY School Officials Accused of Using $50K Meant for At-Risk Students on Jewelry and Luxury Handbags

Two former officials from Greenburgh-Graham Union Free School District in New York have been accused of diverting over $50,000 intended for at-risk students.

As of Wednesday, the Westchester County District Attorney announced that the two former officials had been charged with multiple public corruption offenses.

Ex-superintendent Oliver Levy, 55, and security specialist Surendra Kumar, 48, allegedly used school funds to buy jewelry, luxury handbags, pay private school fees for relatives, and cover veterinary services.

Instead of spending the full sum on school-related expenses, they’re accused of redirecting these funds for personal use.

From 2018 to 2022, they reportedly purchased 168 gift cards meant for school expenses.

Both were arrested in May 2024 and face charges, including grand larceny and corrupting the government.

The top charge could result in 8 to 25 years in prison.
