Texas residents and visitors alike can kick off the fall season by attending a two-in-one Austin festival.
Hosted by local brewery Central Machine Works, Austin’s second annual Texas Wienerfest returns Sep. 21 with the added bonus of pint and pitcher specials to celebrate the start of Oktoberfest.
You might get to witness a record in the making, as the organizers will attempt to set the record for the largest gathering of wiener dogs. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4824 E. Cesar Chavez St.
Whether you’re a fan of puppies or pilsners, it’s a don’t-miss event featuring wiener dog races, dog portrait sessions, and of course, vendors who offer treats for furry friends too. Wiener dog races will kick off at 12 p.m., with two to three heats taking place every 30 minutes.
The lineup of vendors includes Tomlinson’s, PAZ Vet, Westlake Animal Hospital, JustFoodForDogs, Zoom Room Dog Training and more. Austin Subaru also will set up a pit where dogs can pick out a toy while supplies last.
Folks also have an opportunity to support the Central Texas Dachshund Rescue, which will be on-site with adoptable dogs. The rescue makes continuous efforts to rehabilitate and rehome “dachshunds in need of a second chance at life.” Proceeds from the event will be donated to the rescue to support its mission, according to the news release.
Don’t fret if you don’t have a dachshund or can’t commit to a new furry friend. You still can join the fun with specials on pints and pitchers of Oktoberfest beer and Czech pilsner in the brewery’s taproom.
One-liter beer steins with a shot of Jägermeister and Oktoberfest staples like brats, German potato salad, and schnitzel also will be available.
Visitors can enjoy $5 pints and $20 pitchers of Oktoberfest and $7 pints and $26 pitchers of Czech pilsner. Although the festival is free and open to the public, RSVPs are highly encouraged.
The city’s well-known dog photographer ZilkerBark will offer 20-minute dog portraits throughout the event for $35. To book a reservation or learn more about the event, visit https://www.zilkerbark.com/texas-wienerfest.
