Northglenn says by Aug. 1, no more than four dogs or cats in each household – Northglenn-Thornton Sentinel

Northglenn residents have until Aug. 1 to adhere to a new city ordinance that limits the number of cats and dogs under one roof.

Under the new law, each residential dwelling unit in Northglenn will be limited to:

  • A maximum of four dogs
  • A maximum of four cats
  • A combination of cats and dogs

The ordinance will help “maintain a balanced and comfortable environment for all community members,” according to the city’s webpage. Owners of more than four pets in a household can apply for pet exception. They must list each pet’s name, age, sex, breed and the date acquired and enter that information on city form.

If owners don’t tell the city about their extra pets by Aug. 1, it could result in enforcement action, including a potential court order requiring pet removal, according to the city.

The pet rule was approved by the city council March 10 and came about because residents were complaining about the number of dogs and cats in local backyards and homes, city spokeswoman Diana Wilson said via email.

A resident complained to the city council in November 2023 that her neighbor had seven or eight dogs and noise and waste from the dogs affected her ability to use her backyard, according to the city council report.

The ordinance will not apply to cats or dogs that are six months old from the same litter of a female dog or cat in the same dwelling unit the ordinance states. Similar limits have been established by several areas including Arvada, Aurora, Brighton and Broomfield, according to the city.

“Pets bring joy and companionship to our lives, but they also come with responsibilities,” the city’s pet ordinance website states. “By establishing reasonable pet limits, we aim to ensure that everyone living in Northglenn, both pet owners and non-pet owners, can enjoy their homes and neighborhoods.”

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
