JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) — Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday that the over two dozen dogs seen in kennels outdoors under a tarp by neighbors on Johns Island last week were being properly cared for and the owners did not have any ill intent.
Friday, concerned neighbors reported that several dogs on private property were seen in stacked crates under a tarp. 25 dogs were taken from 18 kennels on the property after animal control visited and moved by the owner into a climate-controlled room later that day.
Temperatures peaked in parts of the Charleston area around 90 degrees Friday, and CCSO officials said heat exposure was the primary concern after it was determined that no county ordinances were violated by the owners, who CCSO said acted with “no ill intent,” and against who no charges would be brought forth.
CCSO officials said deputies returned Saturday to find all was well with the dogs and they were being taken care of.

Charleston County Councilman Joe Boykin, who represents Johns Island, is set to meet with Sheriff Carl Ritchie this week to further discuss county animal welfare ordinances, according to CCSO Communications Director Mark Ruppel.
