Looking for a date for Valentine’s Day? Best Friends Animal Society has a few furry options. Cuddles and kisses guaranteed.
On Valentine’s Day on Friday, the animal welfare organization is offering pet lovers a chance to have a sleepover with a dog or a cat from shelters across the country.
“Instead of going out this February 14, why not make a dog or cat looking for a loving home your Valentine?” Best Friends said in a news release. “Give them a night they’ll never forget that might just change their life – no prix fixe menus necessary.”
How to score the Valentine’s Day date
Best Friends Animal Society’s Valentine’s Day sleepovers kick off on Feb. 14 and those interested can stop by a shelter anytime between Feb. 14 and 17 to pick their date. Those interested can also visit Best Friend’s website to “view potential long-term love connections.”

“Fostering is an essential part of the lifesaving process,” Best Friends said in the news release. “This important step also provides crucial personality information on a pet to the animal shelter or rescue group, which can help make better adoption matches for the adoptable dogs and cats.”
Best Friends aims to make the country no-kill this year. The organization, founded in 1984, says it has helped “reduce the number of animals killed in shelters from an estimated 17 million per year to 415,000 last year.”
Which cities are offering foster dates?
Best Friends is offering dates in the following U.S. cities:
- Houston, Texas
- Los Angeles, California
- New York City, New York
- Bentonville, Arkansas
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- Kanab, Utah, where Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the “largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals in the country,” according to the organization, is located
Adoption after fostering
If the connection with your date runs strong, Best Friends is giving fosters the chance to either continue fostering the pet or make it official by adopting it. The organization is offering free adoptions over Valentine’s Day weekend from Feb. 14 to 17 “because the companionship of a pet is priceless.”
Best Friends will also be holding adoption events on Feb. 15 at all their lifesaving centers.
Treats and sweets
To further “sweeten the deal,” Best Friends will be giving out free Blue Buffalo goodie bags with doggie food and treats to all adopters and overnight fosters for the perfect Valentine’s Day dinner.
Dogs’ Date Out
It’s not only Best Friends who is offering to set you up with a date for Valentine’s Day. Chewy is also partnering with shelters across the country to launch “Dogs’ Date Out” during which singles, couples, and dog lovers alike “can find puppy love while giving shelter dogs a special date.”
“This Valentine’s Day weekend, Chewy is playing matchmaker to set people up on a furry first date,” the company said in a news release.
Those interested can get matched with a date by finding a participating shelter on Chewy’s website here.
