WEST HAVEN, Conn. (TNND) — A New York woman was arrested for punching a dog nearly 40 times, according to authorities in Connecticut.
The West Haven Police Department on Monday said 28-year-old Sherin Monachan, of Merrick, N.Y., is facing an animal cruelty charge.
Police said a business in the West Haven area called authorities about a possible case of animal cruelty shortly after noon on Valentine’s Day.
West Haven Animal Control Officers arrived at the scene, where they took a look at surveillance footage, which allegedly showed the abuse.
“Animal Control Officers observed that earlier that morning, at 9:40 AM, a female was sitting in her vehicle with a dog in the front passenger seat,” police said. “Between 9:40 AM and 9:50 AM, while parked in front of the business, the female was seen punching the dog approximately 36 times in various parts of its body, including the head, face, and stomach.”
Police said authorities tracked down Monachan and she was taken into custody.
Authorities also said the dog was seized by West Haven Animal Control “and is being held in a safe location until a court ruling is made on the matter.”
Police shared Monachan’s mugshot on Facebook, with the public praising authorities, as well as the business.
“Thank you to the business that was paying attention and called this in. We need more of you,” one person wrote.
Others criticized the suspect. Some called her alleged behavior “disgusting,” while others said they hope she won’t be allowed to get the dog back — assuming she was the owner.
“If she is able to get this dog back I will truly have lost all faith in the justice system and humanity,” another person noted.
