Dogs in Rosslyn are sure to have a ball with some new play equipment that was placed in Gateway Park’s dog park over the weekend.
Volunteers from R-Dogs, the dog park’s nonprofit sponsor, installed new ramps and a platform for four-legged friends at 1300 Langston Blvd on Sunday, bringing their pets along for an inaugural play-date.
It was a smash hit, R-Dogs President Andrew Spell told ARLnow.
“[The dogs] were very curious about what was going on,” Spell said. “As soon as it got turned over and hooked together, they were pounding up and down, chasing each other over it and just having a blast with it. We’ve noticed a sense that people like it, too.”
The new gear, assembled by a team of about a dozen volunteers, includes two ramps with tunnels and a large platform. It weighs in at some 900 pounds and cost around $6,000.
“For the ‘why,’ we usually say, ‘because we love our dogs,” Spell quipped.
R-Dogs received a $5,000 grant for the equipment from the California-based Molina Foundation, an education and health nonprofit.
Adding new equipment has been a goal of R-Dogs since the dog park’s founding in 2021, Spell said. The project was previously put on hold as the group awaited Gateway Park redesign plans from the county.
Redevelopment plans, which include an expansion of the dog park, were approved in December. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
