LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Nevada SPCA, in collaboration with a local organization, hosted the fifth annual “Reading to Dogs” event at several elementary schools.
The initiative aims to enhance children’s reading skills by providing a non-judgmental audience of dogs.
A total of 160 first graders from Gene Ward and JT McWilliams Elementary Schools participated, reading to a panel of dogs from the Nevada SPCA and volunteers.
The event is designed to create a comfortable environment for children to gain confidence in their reading abilities.
“The dogs aren’t going to judge if they make a mistake on a word, if they mispronounce something, so it’s a really easy way and it gets them really excited to read, and that’s really what we want to do,” said an event organizer. “We want to get them to be excited about reading, to enjoy doing it, and hopefully improve their literacy, cause we’ve seen that improvement of literacy also affects test scores across the board.”
The event also benefits the dogs, who enjoy a day outside the shelter socializing and playing as they continue their search for forever homes.
