Wanting to be a friendly neighbor, one dog made it his mission to stop what he was doing and greet a woman on her morning walk.
TikTok user @bodhibritt was out for her morning stroll around the neighborhood when she spotted the neighbor’s dog running toward her. His tail wagging could be seen from a mile away. He couldn’t help it. He was just thrilled to see a friend down the street.
The Labrador retriever didn’t even bother dropping what he was doing. While the August 30 TikTok video doesn’t show what the dog was doing before seeing the woman, the pup came running toward her with a full bag of trash.
However, as he strutted closer, the bag began to sag. His happy prance down the street caused the bag to rip, and all the trash was dumped out, leaving a trail as he continued. Frustrated, he let out a small whine. It was a whine that meant he would deal with it later, but first, the hellos and making sure her day started with a smile.
It’s not unusual for dogs to hold items in their mouth while greeting someone, although this doesn’t typically include trash. Dogs might pick up a toy, shoe or small item from around the home and bring it with them as they greet whoever comes to the door. This kind of normal behavior is known as excitement displacement.
Dogs become so overwhelmed by excitement that they hold something in their mouth to direct their energy toward. They attempt to calm down, relax and distract themselves through this behavior.
Newsweek reached out to @bodhibritt via TikTok for comment.
The viral video amassed over 587,800 views, 85,800 likes and 564 comments as of Thursday.
“He was doing his best,” said one viewer in the comments, while a second pointed out that the dog’s love language is gifting.
“He was like, ‘Well here let me get it all out and show you,'” commented a TikTok user.
Another wrote, “Labs just want to be the most helpful little helpers even when they are most certainly not haha.”
