Nebraska Humane Society: Dog illness determined to be pneumovirus

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Nebraska Humane Society has identified the virus that forced it to enter emergency protocols earlier this week.

NHS says lab results indicate the most likely cause of respiratory ailments among the shelter’s dogs is pneumovirus, an increasingly common cause of respiratory infections in shelter dogs. It can also give way to other complications like pneumonia.

The shelter describes pneumovirus as an aggressive version of “kennel cough” that does not respond to typical treatments and is highly contagious. This primarily affects canines and presents little risk to humans and felines.

NHS initially suspected the disease to be “strep zoo,” and has operated in an emergency capacity since Sunday. Adoptions and non-emergency intake have been paused since then to protect pets in the shelter and in the community.

NHS says now that the diagnosis is confirmed, its emergency protocol will continue to be in place until further notice. As a reminder, anyone needing to surrender a pet is urged to exhaust all efforts to re-home their pet before calling the shelter. Emergency intake remains available — bear in mind this is limited to medical emergencies, aggression and any situation involving an injury to a human or animal.

Dog adoptions at NHS remain off limits to ensure the virus does not spread to pets already in their homes. Anyone who has adopted a pet since June 2 is asked to continue monitoring for signs of respiratory illness like coughing and nasal discharge; if you see them in your pet, call your veterinarian immediately. Metro vets are being asked to call NHS’ medical team to report any suspected cases and for follow-ups.

If you find a stray and can hold onto the pet, NHS asks you do so for the time being to help minimize potential exposure. Animal Control officials can offer supplies and other assistance handlers may need — dial (402) 444-7800 and press 1.

The shelter’s main lobby and cat and critter adoption areas are considered “green zones,” meaning they are safe from contamination. These areas will reopen to adoptions at 10 a.m. Saturday. To ensure staff availability for the shelter’s dogs, cat and critter adoptions will be “pick your price” through the weekend.

Playgroups remain suspended, but NHS is welcoming donations of enrichment supplies like cardboard boxes, paper bags and training treats. Donations are welcome to be dropped off any time during regular business hours (Noon to 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends). NHS is located at 8929 Fort Street in Omaha.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
