Nationally distributed dog food recalled over possible listeria, salmonella contamination

The Food and Drug Administration announced this week a recall of three types of Answers dog food that was distributed and sold nationwide over concerns of possible listeria and salmonella contamination. The recall was initiated after samples collected by the FDA tested positive for traces of the two bacteria.

No illnesses have been reported in connection to the issue, however the recall is being initiated “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the FDA.

The three types of food being recalled each come in four-pound half-gallon cartons. The recalled products, UPC codes, best by dates and lot codes are as follows:

  • Answers Pet Food Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs with a UPC of 856554002102, best by date of May 6, 2026 and a lot code BUBD MAY 06, 2026.
  • Answers Pet Food Straight Beef Formula for Dogs with a UPC of 856554002072, best by date of Jan. 31, 2026 and a lot code BUBD JAN 31, 2026.
  • Answers Pet Food Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs with a UPC of 856554002065, best by dates of Jan. 2, 2026 and March 11, 2026 and lot codes BUBD JAN 02, 2026 and MAR 11, 2026.

While it rarely causes illness in dogs, listeria can cause diarrhea or vomiting in the pets. Even if dogs aren’t exhibiting symptoms of listeria, they can carry the bacteria and pass it along to humans. Symptoms of listeria in humans include: fever, headache, muscle aches, stiff neck, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, the FDA says.

Salmonella can be contracted by humans from simply touching the contaminated food and cause: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Serious infections can lead to arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

In pets, salmonella can cause lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will also have a decreased appetite and abdominal pain.

If you or your pet have been in contact with the recalled dog food and exhibit these symptoms, you should seek medical attention.

Consumers who purchased the recalled dog food are encouraged to discard the food in a way that makes it inaccessible by adults, children and animals. You should not touch the food with your hands and should avoid letting it come in contact with surfaces in your home.

For refunds, you should contact Answers at info@answerspetfood.com. A receipt and pictures of the contaminated product will need to be provided.
