Canine Companions, a 50-year-old nonprofit, celebrates with a live puppy cam and calls on people to “raise” future service dogs.
SEATTLE — National Puppy Day is Sunday, March 23.
This year, it’s not only a time to celebrate your own pups or your love for puppies. Nonprofit Canine Companions is hoping people will be inspired to volunteer and become “puppy raisers.”
The nearly 18-month commitment helps a puppy gain socialization skills, basic training, and other experiences, before they head on to complete their official service dog training.
Dogs go on to be paired with children and adults who need a service dog in Washington state and across the nation.
One of the newest puppy raisers, Nina, working with the Canine Companions Puget Sound Field Office, stopped by the KING 5 studios to talk about her experience raising Venus VII, a 10-week-old yellow Labrador.

The organization just turned 50. It has paired thousands of service dogs, free of charge, to people who need them most.
