ROCKVILLE, Utah (KUTV) — A dog daycare in Rockville, Utah, was asked to evacuate after a human-caused wildfire began burning dangerously close.
The fire, first reported Friday, had grown quickly in the hours since it sparked, quickly growing to 30 acres and threatening nearby structures – one of which was Canyon Paws, a dog daycare located near the town’s eastern border.
When authorities knocked on the door and asked them to evacuate, owner Anne-Lauree Howell said the only thing on her mind was to get the animals to safety.
“The dogs are the most important thing—everything else is just stuff,” she said. “But getting them out of here was the first priority.”
Canyon Paws is located approximately 15 miles southwest of Zion National Park – and only a few feet away from the Rockville Fire.

“We could see the flames right over here,” said Howell.
Howell says she hadn’t grasped the magnitude of the fire.
“At about half an hour, we were asked to leave. We loaded up the dogs in our cars and went to a safe spot,” said Howell.
Howell couldn’t believe her eyes.
“That’s when it sunk in that we need to get out of here so these guys can do their job,” said Howell.
Several buildings in the area were asked to evacuate for a few hours.
“I was a little worried. It’s so hot and dry, and the wind was blowing,” said Howell.
Even though fire crews have stopped the flames from growing, the damage to the flames will leave a lasting impact.
“It was kind of surreal because you can still smell the smoke and lots of ash in the backyard,” said Howell.
