LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Six dogs were found dead in a locked moving truck in the heat, and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers worked to rescue or seize several other pets from a total of two vehicles.
Police said a man is in custody, and call him the possible owner of both a U-Haul and SUV. A total of ten animals were found inside both vehicles. No word if the man is the owner of all the animals.
Police said around 3 p.m., someone called 911 about a dog locked in a parked U-Haul in the Mountain View Hospital parking lot at 3100 block of N. Tenaya Way. Officers arrived to find the dog in distress and broke the window to rescue it.
Upon investigating the vehicle, police found six other dead dogs in the rear of the moving truck. Other than the dogs inside, police said the U-Haul was otherwise empty.
Several parking spots away, police also surrounded a burgundy SUV. Officers found two dogs and two cats inside, and said the air conditioning was on and the animals were in good condition.
Animal Cruelty section is investigating the incident and is working to determine if the dogs died due to the heat or neglect, and whether the man could face felony or misdemeanor charges.
According to a local moving company, temperatures inside a closed moving truck can soar to 140 degrees and higher.
“This is completely preventable,” said Lt. Bill Giblin of LVMPD. “If your dog’s in your vehicle at any point of the day this time of year, there’s a potential they can become dehydrated and die as a result,” he said.
The Animal Foundation said it was awaiting the arrival of several animals seized from the investigation, Tuesday night, and did not have an update on their condition.
