MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The mother and son accused of throwing two dogs off Dog River Bridge have bonded out of jail.
On Jan. 3, attorneys for Mary Rivers and Tavoris Gallery attended their bond hearing. The mother and son, who did not appear in court, pleaded not guilty. Both were given a $30,000 bond and were ordered to have no contact with animals.
Originally charged with misdemeanors, Mobile Police, Animal Services and the District Attorney’s Office carefully reviewed the case, making the decision to upgrade their charges to two counts of first-degree cruelty to a dog, a Class C felony.
“We believe that the evidence shows that these two defendants intended to kill or cause serious physical injury to both of these dogs,” said District Attorney Keith Blackwood. “There are some circumstances surrounding the investigation that would lead us to believe that we think that they discussed alternative ways to potentially kill the dogs.”
This all happening on Dec. 28 after a photo of a black SUV circulated on social media, showing what appears to be the dogs being thrown off the Dog River Bridge, which stands 73-feet above water.
With the help of MPD, Daphne Search and Rescue and others nearby, the miniature pinschers were rescued and surprisingly were not hurt.
A lot of people wanted to know what led to this.
FOX10 News uncovered court documents that show Rivers allegedly told Gallery to throw the dogs off the bridge after they ate her chickens while she was away.
A neighbor who lives near Rivers and Gallery told FOX10 News Reporter Natalie Williamson they have heard sounds of what they believe to be animals in distress coming from their home.
Animal Services said the dogs are still healthy and are being cared for by a foster family, getting lots of love and care.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 6.
