More than a dozen dogs in need of homes after Rio Rico hoarding situation

RIO RICO, Ariz. (KVOA) – Animal rescue groups from across Southern Arizona are desperately trying to rehome 19 dogs after a hoarding situation in Rio Rico.

According to rescue group Hope of Deliverance, 36 dogs were being housed at a home in Rio Rico but the owner has decided to move away at the end of the month and can’t care for the dogs.

“These dogs are healthy and are great with other dogs. They are all 20-30lbs. Sweet pups. If you can foster or want to adopt, please contact me ASAP – these dogs have 10 days to find homes. This is an urgent plea!!” Hope of Deliverance Director Bree Kishman said in a news release.

News 4 Tucson went to Nogales where Vanessa Lane, the owner of Little Angels Dog Rescue, was trying to get several of the dogs spayed and neutered at a local vet so they could be ready for adoption.

Lane said the dog’s lives are at risk because the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter has very little to no capacity left.

“Unfortunately when they are really full they have to euthanize for space, with them having more than 12 that need placement they would immediately start euthanizing,” she said.

As of Wednesday morning 17 dogs have been rehomed, leaving 19 in need of adoption.

Jennifer Zammit helped adopted one of the dogs and is fostering another. She urges others to do the same to save the dogs. She questions why things got so out of hand.

“36 dogs unspayed, unneutered, are just left alone in a yard area, I just want to ask her [dog owner] what did you expect was going to happen it’s frustrating and it’s heartbreaking it’s heartbreaking to leave those other dogs behind,” she said.

Lane said hoarding is a common problem and believes a lack of spaying and neutering is a big part of the problem.

“It happens all the time, people end up getting a lot of dogs and they are dog lovers, the lady obviously loved her animals but she couldn’t get them spayed or neutered so they kept having more and having more,” Lane explained.

If you would like to help adopt some of the dogs you are asked to contact Kishman at breekishman@gmail.com or Lane at 520-221-8106.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
