MAS announced the latest outbreak on March 12. At that time, three kennel areas were affected.
The March outbreak came on the heels of a January CDV outbreak that also caused 100 animals to be euthanized.
“This course of action was not taken lightly and follows extensive consideration of the shelter’s extreme overcrowding conditions and the serious risks posed by the virus. Distemper is a highly contagious and serious disease that can spread rapidly in a shelter environment, particularly among young or non-vaccinated animals. During times of high puppy intake, outbreaks tend to occur as these puppies can be carriers of the virus,” MAS said while announcing the March outbreak.
