Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) reports that a moose attacked a man and his two dogs in Woodland Park. One of the dogs sustained severe injuries and had to be euthanized.
According to CPW, moose are increasingly common across Colorado. The state’s moose population has doubled in the last decade, growing from approximately 2,000 in 2013 to an estimated 4,000 today.
The agency is using this incident as a reminder for the public to give wildlife plenty of space, especially moose, which are large and potentially aggressive animals. Moose often perceive dogs as threats, responding defensively — particularly if they are protecting their calves.
📢 CPW advises:
- Always observe wildlife from a safe distance
- Keep dogs leashed in areas where wildlife may be present
- Avoid startling or approaching moose
