Moment dog who lost part of her face to abuse enjoys her first-ever pup cup

Hearts have broken among internet viewers watching a severely abused dog experiencing one of life’s pleasures for the first time as she tucked into a ‘pup cup’.

Andrea Roubal, 53, volunteers with local rescue Labor of Love Transport Rescue, and took the horrifically maimed dog into her home after she was found in a rural neighborhood in Greenville, South Carolina. It is a known “dumping ground for unwanted dogs,” Roubal told Newsweek.

The dog was quickly named Sugar for her incredibly sweet and affectionate nature, despite being covered in “devastating scars, which seemed to cover half her face,” Roubal said. “It looked as if half of her face had been torn away,” she added.

The rescue initially thought another dog had caused Sugar’s injuries, as “she had bite wound scars all over her neck and head, her snout was misplaced on the side of her face.” Sugar looked similar to a previously rescued pup, Sammy, a dogfighting survivor the rescue had saved in 2022.

Dogfighting is where dogs who have been bred and trained to fight are forced to attack each other for entertainment and profit, ending only when one of the canines is unable to continue. It is illegal, and a felony in all 50 states in the U.S.

However, Sugar’s veterinarian, who undertook her first reconstruction surgery, believes Sugar’s devastating injuries were “caused by being dragged, possibly by a car or a similar force.”

But, despite it all, Sugar is “the kindest girl, brimming with energy and a love for adventure,” and “once she is fully recovered, we plan to find her the most perfect home.”

A video shared by Roubal to her account @fostermamaforthebroken showed Sugar getting a taste for the loved, pampered life, as she tucked into her first ‘pup cup,’ a whipped cream treat for dogs.

The clip, which has racked up more than 361,000 views and almost 30,000 likes, shows Sugar eagerly gulping down the cream, still able to use her tongue despite half her face appearing to be missing.

Roubal said: “Sugar is deeply appreciative of having someone to love her and give her affection. She was hesitant about the pup cup initially, but the moment the whipped cream touched her tongue, she was hooked.”

And animal lovers flocked to the video in their thousands, with one writing: “I love you so much for giving this beautiful puppers a beautiful life.”

“I’m always drawn to the old dogs, the ones who have medical problems or had a rough life because they normally have the sweetest souls,” another posted.

“Still a beautiful soul inside and out,” one comment read, with another offering “prayers for healing.”

Roubal, who spent 30 years as a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security, now spends her time at the 100 percent volunteer-run charity. She supports “dogs requiring extra medical care or those who have been traumatized by humans.”

Roubal absolutely loves the reaction Sugar’s videos have had online, saying she “deserves every bit of support we can give her.”

She added: “The fact that she is still with us, after enduring and overcoming such unimaginable cruelty and horrors inflicted by humans, is nothing short of miraculous.”
