MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The Mobile County Animal Shelter is asking for the public’s help to clear out the shelter.
The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office busted a dog fighting ring on Saturday night at a home in Axis. According to the sheriff’s office, 29 people were arrested and 32 dogs were rescued.
“Just barbaric, it really is,” Sheriff Paul Burch said.
Deputies are still searching for Jeff Marks Jr., who is accused of running the ring out of his home. Sheriff Burch said Marks ran away during the raid, leaving his wife and kids to be arrested.
“That’s just not something a true man does,” Sheriff Burch said.
Those 32 dogs were taken to the Mobile County Animal Shelter. However, before the raid, the shelter was already pushing capacity with 83 animals.
“So that means space is critical right now,” Mobile County spokesperson Sharee Broussard said.
The 32 abused animals have to be kept in a separate room away from the other animals and in individual kennels due to their background of fighting.
Right now, the shelter does not plan to euthanize any of the dogs. According to statistics posted online, the Mobile County Animal Shelter has not used that euthanasia as a method to make space since 2018.
“The dogs that were confiscated are not up for adoption,” Broussard said.
However, the 83 dogs who have been living at the shelter before the intake are up for adoption. Adult dogs have no adoption fees while puppies are $40 or less to adopt.
The shelter is located on Howells Ferry Rd, adoption hours run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
