Minnesota family’s missing dog survives week alone in the wild

For Terressa Trattles, her 2 1/2-year-old German Shepherd Walter is a member of the family. So she is grateful her family is whole again, after Walter was missing for nearly a week.

“My heart has been extremely back to fullness. I got my boy back,” said Trattles.

Trattles says Walter was sitting in their front yard in Remer, Minnesota, about three hours north of the Twin Cities, a week ago last Saturday, when he suddenly took off.

She eventually came across some of his paw prints about a mile away, but Walter was nowhere to be found.

“I was scared that another animal was going to eat him because in this country, you got your wolves and your coyotes,” said Trattles.

Trattles put up flyers around town at the urging of The Retrievers, a nonprofit that helps dog owners find their missing pets.

While they were in the process of setting up food stations and trail cams to track Walter’s whereabouts, Trattles got a call that he had been found by some Good Samaritans about six miles from their family’s home, nearly a week after he disappeared.

“He could not walk. Very skinny. When we finally got him to the vet, they said if it would have been an hour to two hours later, he would have died,” said Trattles.

“For their friends to come across him like that was remarkable. He definitely has some dog angels,” said Kathy Britain, from The Retrievers.

After treating him with an IV at home for several days, Trattles says Walter is on his way to making a full recovery.

But she says she always had hope.

“I’d like to tell people, ‘don’t give up on your dog’. I didn’t give up on him. It just shows you got your best friend out there. you search for him,” said Trattles.

Trattles says Walter has another vet appointment on Tuesday.

If all goes well, he is expected to make a full recovery.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
