“I know they loved me and I loved them very much. I just wish they didn’t have to leave that way,” Vela said. “I’m left traumatized with no dogs, nothing but their ashes now.”
His nightmare began on Nov. 30.
Vela took his three small dogs, Bear, Rambo and Brownie, out in the backyard. Surveillance shows the moment when a German shepherd and pit bull ran from behind some trash cans. Vela tried getting away.
“I went in and I closed the door thinking that Brownie had chased in with me,” Vela said.
His little chihuahua was still outside when the two dogs attacked him.
“All I could hear were my dog’s last barks,” Vela said. “I saw him take his last breath.”
He reported the attack and the dogs’ owner was cited, but the dogs weren’t removed.
Just days ago, Vela’s heartache grew when his mom called.
“She tells me, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to take this, but the dogs attacked Rambo.’”

Surveillance shows the same dogs attacking the small shih tzu just seconds after he went outside. His injuries were so bad he had to be put down.
“I was devastated,” Vela said. “I didn’t know what to do.”
The Department of Neighborhood Services said on Monday, Jan. 6, the dog’s owner surrendered the attacking dogs to be euthanized. It’s something Vela wishes had happened sooner.
“Hug your pet. Hug your dog,” Vela said. “You never know it will be the last time that you see them again.”
