MENOMINEE, Mich. – Michigan police officers hit dogs with their patrol vehicle and fatally shot one of them after they were allegedly acting aggressively near a school playground.
On Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025, a school resource officer at Menominee Elementary School, located in the Upper Peninsula, contacted police about two pit bulls that were barking aggressively at children at the playground.
Police responded and found the dogs in the 1200 block of 10th Street.
It was originally reported that someone had been attacked by a dog, but officers later learned that the dog “aggressively charged” the person, and did not bite them.
After that, the dogs chased another person, who got into the bed of a pickup truck to get away from them.
The officers tried to stop the dogs with a dog pole and Tasers but failed.
“As the situation escalated, officers observed the dogs running back toward the school playground,” said the Menominee Police Department. “To prevent an immediate threat to the children, officers struck the dogs with a patrol vehicle and subsequently had to fatally shoot one of them.”
Police say the second dog, a brown and white female pit bull, is at large and might be injured.
They advise residents to be cautious and report sightings of the dog to 906-863-5568.
“The safety of the community, especially our children, remains our top priority,” police said. “We appreciate the cooperation of residents as we work to locate the remaining dog and ensure public safety.”
