Four dogs were killed and three more were rescued after a house fire in Mexico, Missouri, Friday morning, according to the Mexico Public Safety Department.
An off-duty Mexico firefighter saw smoke coming from a house on Friday around 11:44 a.m. in the 1200 block of Hendricks Drive, and firefighters found a fire in the basement of the house, according to the public safety department.
Firefighters contained and extinguished in the fire in the area, with the basement suffering moderate fire damage and the house sustaining moderate smoke damage, according to the public safety department.
The resident was not home during the time of the fire, but there were numerous dogs inside, according to the public safety department. Firefighters were able to rescue three dogs and temporarily turned them over to Mexico Animal Control. According to the public safety department, the fire killed four dogs.
Investigation indicates the fire started in an area where there were numerous small appliances and other electrical devices plugged into one power strip, according to the public safety department. The power strip and cords were covered by other personal items, the public safety department said.
