METROPOLIS, Ill. (KFVS) – A cry for help from a dog pound in the Heartland as it’s running out of room.
The Metropolis dog pound focuses on animal control and not rescue. It’s nearing capacity and officials say there’s an urgent need to save the animals before it’s too late.
Officer John Roman said in his 12 years working at Metropolis Animal Control, he’s never had to euthanize an animal for space, but it could happen very soon.
“Right now, we are so full. If we get to capacity we are gonna have to euthanize dogs,” said Roman.
He said it’s a very tough situation to be in, but doesn’t have many options.
“We don’t want to euthanize animals, but we don’t have a choice. If we don’t have space we don’t have anywhere to put them,” he explained.
Roman put out a plea on Facebook, begging folks to adopt a dog to make room for others.
“We need to get the word out there for people to come adopt dogs. I adopted two last week. The rescue community though is in bad shape. It’s not just us. Everyone is having trouble pulling dogs,” he continued.
If you would like to save a life and offer a dog a home, the Metropolis Animal Control is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
