Metro East animal rescue needs help raising funds to save more dogs

GODFREY, Ill. (First Alert 4) – At Hope Animal Rescues, it’s a labor of love.

For the past 20 years, Jackie Spiker, the co-founder of Hope Rescues, has spent her days surrounded by an orchestra of barking dogs, giving them a second chance at life.

“We pride ourselves on saving dogs from animal control on the day they are to be euthanized,” Spiker said.

The rescue, which sits on 14 acres, was designed with enrichment in mind. The dogs are treated like family, given the love and life they deserve before getting a forever home.

But now, the rescue is facing new challenges. Since COVID, and with the current economy, Spiker said prices have increased so much it is hurting the rescue’s budget.

“So we are still spending double than what we are used to, but we are not getting double the donations,” she said.

Now, she is making a call to the public for help. The rescue is working to raise $17,000.

“It is a huge goal, but we need to hit that goal because dogs are dying at animal control,” said Spiker. “We can’t save them because we have to be fiscally responsible.”

Sue Brown-Nonn, director of Granite City Animal Control, said the impact of Hope Animal Rescues can’t be overstated.

“Hope is in my heart, it really is,” Brown-Nonn said. “For the year 2024, we were a no-kill shelter, and if I didn’t have this, I couldn’t have done that.”

While the needs at the rescue are many, the mission remains clear, changing the lives, one dog at a time.

“You know, I know, we can’t change the world, but every dog we rescue, for sure, their life and their world is changed forever, ” Spiker said.

Organizers at the rescue created a GoFundMe for their fundraising efforts. You can also donate directly on the rescue’s website.

Spiker said they are always looking for volunteers to donate their time to help care for the dogs, as well.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
