Meghan Markle reportedly sought free handbags from Victoria Beckham before ultimately distancing herself from the fashion icon, as detailed in Tom Bower‘s new biography, “The House of Beckham: Money, Sex and Power.” The book explores the complex relationship between the Beckhams and the Sussexes, revealing the sources of their fallout.
Bower suggests that the Duchess of Sussex admired Victoria Beckham and aspired to emulate her style. According to him, while Meghan was engaged to Prince Harry, she asked Victoria for complimentary clothes and handbags.

However, this request was turned down by the Palace, citing rules against accepting free gifts. The biography also claims that Meghan felt “irritated” upon learning that Victoria Beckham had significantly more wealth than she did.
Strained relationship
The relationship between the two high-profile families began to show signs of strain in 2018. Despite being invited to Harry and Meghan’s wedding, the Beckhams were not included in the wedding dinner.
Further evidence of the strained relationship emerged last spring when the Sussexes were not invited to Brooklyn Beckham‘s wedding, although Prince William and Kate Middleton were on the guest list.
Bower‘s book, released on June 20, suggests that Meghan viewed herself as higher in the social hierarchy than the Beckhams.
She was reportedly upset to discover that Victoria Beckham, despite Meghan‘s royal status, was considered more influential in terms of wealth and fame. This revelation is said to have contributed to the growing distance between the Sussexes and the Beckhams.
“In Meghan‘s celebrity world, ranking depended on wealth and fame,” Bower noted.
“As a seasoned operator, Meghan deluded herself that her status in the Royal Family placed her above Victoria in the social pecking order.
“She was irritated to discover that the Beckhams had considerably more wealth than herself. They owned five homes, had constant access to private jets, invitations to sail on yachts and much more money. And she was soon to be a duchess.”
