For her girls‘ lunch, Meghan Markle carried a Christian Dior Lady D-Lite bag – a choice which was a tribute to her royal roots in several ways. The bag, now a classic for the French design house, was launched in 1994 and became one of the brand’s most popular designs after Princess Diana wore it a year later. She had been given one as a present by Bernadette Chirac, then France’s first lady, when she visited Cézanne exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris, sponsored by the LVMH group.
The simple, top-handle shape quickly became a favourite for Diana, who ordered it in every available colour and version. In fact, she was seen sporting the design so often that, in 1996, the house renamed the bag the ‘Lady Dior’, with Diana’s blessing.
Meghan’s Dior bag, however, carries a further royal reference: it’s embroidered with ‘DSSOS’, the initials of her royal title, the Duchess of Sussex. It isn’t the first time Meghan has worn this particular bag: in 2021, she debuted her Dior at the Global Citizen Live concert, which she attended with Prince Harry as part of a tour of New York. It feels significant that the Duchess, who has apparently sought to distance herself from the royal family, should make this sartorial nod to her title and, by extension, her old life – could this be a spot of secret messaging?
